Pioneers in the Austrian wind power market

Ökowind Erneuerbare Energieerzeugungs GmbH, based at 10 Unter-Zwischenbrunn in 3100 St. Pölten, was founded in 2003 by managing director Karl Weiß. Mr. Karl Weiß has been involved in renewable energy since the 1980s. The first project idea he implemented was the Pottenbrunn wind farm, thereby establishing Windlicht Erneuerbare Energieerzeugungs GmbH with his first partner, the certified engineer Johannes Trauttmansdorff. This first project - the Pottenbrunn wind farm - was one of the first wind farms in Austria to be connected to the grid and was put into operation in 1998. Since then he has become one of the most well-known figures in the Austrian wind energy industry.

A company in the market of the future: renewable energy

The company's two main tasks are project development for and operation of wind, hydro-, and solar power plants. Over the past 15 years, several wind farms with over 50 wind turbines have been developed in Burgenland and in the Greater St. Pölten area. The installed capacity is more than 110 MW. The company Ökowind is responsible for the operation of 12 of these turbines, with a total rated output of 29.35 MW. The company is currently working intensively on wind power projects in Austria.

Contributing to security of supply

Hydropower has been supplying Austria with clean and emission-free electricity for many decades. The company acquired the Neubruck small hydropower plant on the Erlauf river and built a modern, visitor-friendly power plant in its place. It has a rated output of 1.2 MW and started operation in June 2010. Through this small hydropower plant, which generates decentralised energy, ÖKOwind contributes to the security of energy supply in Austria.
